Our Publications

Being at the forefront of rights of light and party wall matters, we have played a leading role in producing publications for the construction industry.

Lance Harris, director at Anstey Horne, is co-author of Anstey’s Rights of Light and how to deal with them (Fourth Edition, RICS Books, 2006) and Graham North, also a director, is co-author of Anstey’s Party Walls and what to do with them (Sixth Edition, RICS Books, 2005). Both books can be purchased through RICS Books at www.ricsbooks.com.

Graham was chairman of the working group, of which fellow director Aidan Cosgrave was also a member, that produced The Party Wall Act Explained, published by the Pyramus and Thisbe Club. He was also a member of the team that has produced the RICS guidance note Party Walls Legislation and Procedures (6th Edition, 2011).

Anstey's Rights of Light

Anstey's Rights of Light

A right to light is an easement. It is a right acquired by one party over another's land. Sounds simple enough, but unfortunately, it seldom is. Through the unrivalled insights of the late John Anstey and with the additions of current expert Lance Harris, a one-time colleague of John, this book sets out to shed light onto the mysteries and pitfalls of this right. Using personal experiences, and a wealth of anecdotes and diagrams, it covers all aspects of this contentious topic. Previous editions of this much-loved book have helped countless students, surveyors, developers and lawyers get to grips with this complex subject. The commentary, examples, legal points and anecdotes have all been thoroughly updated for the fourth edition of this classic, to ensure that rights of light can be accessibly understood by a new audience.

Anstey's Party Walls

In his lifetime John Anstey helped countless surveyors (and many lawyers) get to grips with party walls. He was the leading commentator of his generation writing a number of bestselling books and helped develop the Party Wall Act. Now published in its sixth edition, John's original text has been updated by his one-time colleague and partner Graham North - who knows a thing or two about these things as well. You'll find expert explanation on the main party wall issues, terms and rulings delivered in an accessible format that remains distinct from almost all books on this popular and contentious subject. This is the ideal companion volume to the RICS Guidance Note 'Party Wall Legislation and Procedure'.
